How to Accelerate Hair Growth In 5 Easy Steps

We’ve all been there before, you’ve straightened your hair too much or religiously dyed it. Maybe you just never knew how to properly care for your curls and now you’re stuck with short, limp, brittle hair. Now you want nothing more than to get it back to its original state. Possibly even to grow a couple inches; well let me share with you my tips to growing my hair!

A little over 2 years ago I got my first haircut and at the time it felt like it would be years until I saw any growth. Over the months I, along with others have begun to notice how long it’s been getting! Since everyone has been asking me about the products I use and what my routine is, I figured why not use this opportunity to share my simple tips to grow my hair faster!

When using these tips it’s important to remember each persons hair growth rate and texture is different, so it can vary among individuals.

1. Braid Your Hair

I always knew the importance of braiding your hair as a child, but never to the point where I thought it would help grow my hair? When I got my hair cut for the first time my hair stylist and I had a long conversation about how I should be caring for my hair. She told me one key way to help my curl pattern was to braid my hair every night before bed. In the beginning, it was a tedious task but over the past few months, it’s gotten a lot easier for me!

2. Deep condition once a week

It’s important that your hair receives moisture, as it’s an easy way for it to begin to split and break. My stylist Suzanne, told me an easy way to make sure your hair gets the moisture and protein it needs is to use a deep conditioner once a week. Each conditioner will specify how to use their product but always try to leave it in for at least 3-4 hours to see a maximum result! A little tip is to wrap your hair with a plastic cap to keep the moisture locked in!

3. Invest in a wide tooth comb

Now, this may just be for someone with 3B hair, like me. but I noticed when I stopped using my pick comb to brush my hair(when wet & conditioned) and a wide tooth comb instead my curls began to form a larger curl pattern.  Wide tooth combs are known for there ability to stimulate the scalp and improve blood circulation, so that could have helped as well, but I personally felt like it wasn’t causing as much strain to my curls.

4. Reduce Heat Use

Now I know this is a big one for all of you, but let me assure you it is for the best. I stopped straightening my hair back in June of 2012. I remember the day because I promised myself on my prom that I would stop using heat, even if it’s a blow dryer on my hair. I really wanted to give myself a chance to see if it would make an improvement and it did!

It’s not that hard, all you need is a turban microfibre cap. I purchased one of these originally 3 years ago at a Dollarama and had never been so happy giving away $3.

After every shower, I use this hair towel to dry off my hair, why I don’t just use a regular towel you ask? Well, that’s because bath towels aren’t designed with your hair in mind. These towels are much more corse so the material itself can damage and break your hair. It’s nothing seen to the human eye, but the same thing applies to your face as you shouldn’t be drying your face with the towel. Talk about bacteria!

This is why you should switch over to a proper hair towel that won’t leave your hair frizzy!

5. Get a Satin/Silk Cap

Now for my favourite part, satin/silk cap or for the bougie bitties, we have the satin pillowcase. I was told years ago to always wrap my hair before bed, but at the time I was a rookie working with a scarf. Now if any of you have tried sleeping on a satin scarf then you will know the level of patience you need with this thing. But knowing how the internet is full of surprises I searched for a satin cap that wouldn’t fall off as easily. I then came across (my current HG) satin cap, this thing stuck by me for years; until the elastic band started to stretch. Since then I’ve found my new favourite which is my satin pillowcase. I love it for when I have my lazy days and don’t want to braid my hair I won’t have to worry with my hair spilling out of the cap and in general not having to wake up in the middle of the night to readjust my cap!

For those of you interested in a salon specially for curly hair folks like myself, go check out The Curl Ambassador on Harbour! Suzanne was amazing and Caroline, the owner was absolutely wonderful! The atmosphere is very cozy and would recommend this place!! Now, these are just a few simple tricks that I noticed really helped my hair grow since I gotten my first haircut. I had not gotten any trims since then and to be honest I think I might book one soon! But in my opinion, I do believe my hair cut had really helped my journey.
