At the age of 22 you would think I would have found a hairdresser who knows how to cut curly hair; but unfortunately, that hadn’t’ been the case until recently. My hairstylist, Suzanne, reminds me a lot of my own mother. She’s the type to be straight with you when it comes to your hair. Suzanne will tell you exactly what’s wrong and how to move forward.
I've heard many women complain that hairdressers do know how to cut curly hair(me included) but a hairdressers’ biggest problem is when a customer ask for either an unachievable or doesn’t know exactly what she wants.
You can’t go in with a 4b hair type and ask for Beyoncé ‘Cater To You‘ 3b. That won’t happen without the help of a weave – which ladies isn’t always a bad idea now a day’s weaves, extensions, and wigs are a lot more common than you think, but if you take the time to learn about your curl pattern and the texture of your hair then you can successfully get the look you desire.
Granted, we’ve all been told a few horror stories what would scare any women into not wanting to go to a hair salon. Even I have gone to two different salons’ previously and walked out extremely unimpressed. Speaking from a black women perspective, I assumed that all black women knew how to tend to mixed hair. But a few minutes in, I soon realized this wasn’t always the case.
On my mother’s side I’m mixed with Irish and Polish with a little bit of Lithuanian, and from my father’s side I’m mixed with Jamaican and Guatemalan; so I’m very multi-cultured. Growing up, my mother had always fixed my hair in the most elaborate hairstyles without damaging my curls.
It wasn’t until recently, having discovered The Curl Ambassadors that it changed my perception on cutting hair. As long as you know what you want and your curl pattern you can achieve anything you desire.
